"How to create a home office that really works"

Because a home office is where we do our planning, organising and creating, it is important that the environment be one that is conducive to clear thinking and functioning. We have all heard the saying “A cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind”. I take this even further to include the entire office space. Whether you are fortunate to have a spare room to use as an office, a dual-purpose room, or just an unused corner, the same principles will apply.

  • Be sure to have a desk and chair that are comfortable for your particular size. Position your desk so that you are facing the door. If you share the work space, an adjustable chair is a must.
  • Maximise storage…floor to ceiling shelves; file drawers, wire baskets all help to keep clutter under control.
  • Place a rubbish bin near the area where you typically open your mail to allow for immediate disposal of unnecessary papers.
  • If you must use your office space for other activities as well, consider a compact work station that folds away and disappears when not in use.
  • Install blinds that allow adjustable light for window coverings rather than curtains. They provide a neater more organised feel as well.
  • Proper task lighting is critical for alertness and to minimise eye strain. Use a flexible free-standing halogen light to shine directly on the work surface.
  • Devise a colour -coded labelling system for your files and folders for easy identification and access.
  • An entire fitted office system is the best way to maximise space in any room, large or small. Their flexibility allows you to tailor the design to suit your particular needs.
  • Keep electrical cords under control and grouped together by using a plastic cord caddy.
  • Walls should be painted in clear colours that are stimulating without being overly so. Yellow is good for mental activity, while touches of orange stimulate creativity.
  • A tape or CD player for your favourite music can be conducive to work, radios however, tend to be distracting.

Even if you are able to carry out only some of these suggestions, you will notice a significant difference in the way your office functions.
