Guide to Ivychurch

If you’re looking for property to buy or rent in one of the sleepy villages surrounding the town of Ashford, and peace and solitude is more of a priority to you and the family than an array of amenities and activities, Ivychurch could be just the location you are looking for.

With a population of less than 300, Ivychurch is a quiet and tranquil village nestled in the heart of the Romney Marsh, just five miles south of Hamstreet and close to Brenzett and New Romney. The village has Saxon and Celtic history, and is awash with stories of smugglers and gangs who used to frequent the area.

The village of Ivychurch is dominated by the 13th century Church of St Georges, a true ‘Cathedral of the Marsh’ which stands proudly in the centre of the village and features a square clock tower as well as a First World War memorial plaque commemorating the seven men lost from the village, and can be seen from all sides thanks to the vast, flat surrounding area.

It is said that there is a tunnel that linked one of the houses from the village to the church during the smuggling area, but if you want to find out if this is fact or just a tall tale, I guess you’ll have to move there and ask the locals or discover it for yourself!

The views across the whole village are far-reaching, across hills and grazing land and are littered with small, scattered settlements that consist of some of the county’s most beautiful, traditional weatherboarded cottages.

Ivychurch offers plenty in the way of peace and tranquility, with residents here enjoying the numerous walking routes across the fields and marshes, and cyclists and horse riders partaking of the quiet country lanes.

The hub of Ivychurch village is The Bell Inn, considered one of the best pubs in Romney Marsh having won ‘Pub of the year’ on several occasions. If you’re in the mood for an evening out once you’ve settled into your new home in Ivychurch, this is the place to be. Perfect for a night socialising with friends and family, meeting new people, or just relaxing with a quiet pint, the pub is wheelchair accessible, child-friendly, and dogs are welcome if kept on a lead.

Even though Ivychurch is small and remote, if you buy or rent a property in the village it doesn’t mean you are cut off from civilisation! Ivychurch isn’t far from the A2070, which means that Ashford and the International Station are within commuting distance if you need to travel for work, study, or want to venture into a larger town to enjoy all of the fine dining and leisure opportunities on offer.

The English coastline of Kent and East Sussex are within easy reach for Ivychurch residents too, offering bracing beach walks with the dogs during the colder months, and sunny, ice-cream-filled seaside days in the summer.
